The father/daughter "team" of Glenn Smith and Alice Smith became the first coaching duo to win a Maryland state championship in basketball. Mr. Smith won at Williamsport high and his daughter Alice won at Francis Scott Key High. Williamsport high school girls tennis team has 3 consecutive undefeated seasons 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97 for a record of 45-0. Mr. Richard Doub was the first state championship coach for the girls of Williamsport High and Mrs. Doub attended every game. Bertha Miller coached 22 of her 29 teams to a county championship. There were no state competitions during her coaching career. Rosemarie Williams coached 15 county championship teams and 4 state championships. Pam Unger was the first girl to run cross country for Williamsport High. Catherine Turner Gilbert and Barbara Turner Brock laid the foundation for track and field at Williamsport in the 60's and in the 80's their children and nieces set records in the sport. Since 1981, every girl who has played volleyball at WHS for at least 3 years has been part of one or more state championships. Williamsport has won 9 state championships in volleyball. This not only leads the county but also leads in the state for the most wins. WHS also holds the record for the most state final appearances in the state. Williamsport has won 5 state championships in Cross Country. Cindy Neugebauer has earned 6 volleyball state championships as a coach making her the winningest coach on that level. Dena Higdon was the first Washington County female to win a state championship for indoor track (2 mile). Carla Houser (93) and Selena Wilkes (92) were both named to both basketball and volleyball all state teams. The first year Maryland had all state teams in volleyball and basketball Williamsport had 2 girls on each team. Ruby Hoffman Byers played varsity fieldball 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Shelly Smith holds more state championship titles than any other girl at Williamsport High School (8). Carla Houser and Sheri Artz both hold 4 consecutive state championship titles. In the 1989 state track/field meet, Kristi Hart (89) won 4 state championships in track/field relay events (400 meter, 800 meter, 1600 meter and 3200 meter). Williamsport High School has 25 state titles in track & field and cross country combined. 17 girls have combined their efforts to win those 25 championships and Carla Houser and Shelly Smith together were responsible for 17 of them. Megan Knepper holds the most individual state championship records of any girl or woman in Williamsport - 10 swim records. Sarah McDonald was nominated as a cheerleader for the Hawaii pro bowl. Aimee Grahe tried out for a semi-pro soccer team. Selena Wilkes played on the futures professional golf tour in 1997 and will be back on tour in 2002. The athletes of the 1991-1992 school year won 2 team state championships; 1 for volleyball and 1 for basketball. The girls soccer team was the state finalist for three consecutive years, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The 3200 (outdoor) relay team of Theresa Ruland, Laura Scuffins, Laura Forsythe, and Kristin Berry broke the 1978 record of 10:10.8 (Brenda Crawford, Julie Burley, Theresa Patey, and Shelly Smith) with a new county record of 10:10.0. Two weeks later the 3200 relay team broke their own record with 9:49.53 to finish 2nd in the state. The girls' 1600 relay team broke the school record of 4:08.2 set in 1983 by Kelli Myers, Cindy Austin, Tracey Gilbert, and Crystal Brown with a time of 4:07.83. Kristin Berry and Theresa Ruland both broke Shelly Smith's long standing 1981 school record for the 800 meter. Shelly's record was 2:22.6. Kristin ran 2:20.56 and Theresa clocked in at 2:22.22. The volleyball team won its 10th
State Championship in 2003. Megan Knepper, University of Maryland Sophomore, is the 2003 All-ACC and honorable mention All-American selection in swimming. She qualified for the NCAA Championships in 3 events. Megan also established a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke. She is an Olympic trial qualifier. Three generations of WHS athletes have experienced a State Championship. Senior Meghann Weaver was a member of the 2003 WHS Cross Country Championship team while her mother, Teresa (Patey) Weaver was a member of the 1978 WHS Cross Country ‘Honorary’ State Championship team. Meghann’s grandmother, Pat (Tracey) Weaver, was a member of the 1942 WHS Basketball State Championship team. |
